Dating back to 400 B.C., and even before the Spanish colonization, Muzo’s legendary emerald mine in western Boyacá, Colombia, is steeped in rich history, spanning the globe from ancient civilizations to the opulence of royal courts in the New World. The unparalleled beauty of its vibrant green gemstones is imbued with mysticism and spirituality, symbolic of its storied past. Since 2009 when The Muzo companies took over, Muzo is enjoying a dynamic renaissance and revitalization as an integrated, modern “Mine to Maison” house, known as Muzo Emerald Colombia. While the house maintains the splendor that characterized emeralds from antiquity to Hollywood aristocracy, its contemporary arm is paving the way for the future through distinctive artistry and a steadfast commitment to traceability, transparency and environmental impact.
The mines of Muzo comprise five underground galleries. Four of them are vertical mines: Tequendama, Catedral and Volvere, which descend more than 300 feet, and the oldest gallery, Puerto Arturo, reaches lower than 500 feet underground. The fifth gallery, La Rampa, unlike the others is spiral bored to 1,300 feet underground. La Rampa is a testing ground for modern mining methods that facilitate geological research and optimize extraction conditions. It is vast enough to accomodate large motorized machinery. All five mines are fitted with a ventilation system and state-of-the-art instruments that track the visual, digital, physical and chemical traceability of the gems.
The brand philosophy seeks to honor this legendary gemstone through perfection in cutting, polishing and exceptional design. Finished collections include collaborations with contemporary design talent as well as signature Muzo fine and high jewelry that keeps the famed “green gemstone” alive. The creativity of these endeavors results in inspired collections for the modern-day jewelry collector. Our technical and sustainable continuous efforts and actions pay homage to Muzo’s rich heritage, as we transform the historical site into an unrivalled gem facility and 21st century mining phenomenon.
